Families across Lake Oswego, West Linn, Oregon City and Stafford have a five-day county fair starting Tuesday, Aug. 18, when the Clackamas County Fair and Canby Rodeo opens at the Clackamas County Event Center in Canby, about 25 miles south.
Gates open at 10 a.m. each day through Saturday, Aug. 22.
For 4-H and FFA youth across Clackamas County, the fair marks the payoff of a year's work. Young competitors will show animals and enter contests spanning pies, cakes, sewing, photography and a talent show, according to the West Linn Tidings. The agricultural tradition stretches back more than a century: the Clackamas County Event Center has hosted the fair since 1907, according to the fair's website.
The rodeo runs all five nights.
The Canby Rodeo draws top cowboys and cowgirls alongside competition-level stock, and organizers say it annually packs the arena. Rodeo tickets are sold separately at canbyrodeo.com.
This year's fair, presented by title sponsor Clarios, carries the theme "Pigs, Pies & Patriotism," according to the fair's website. The entertainment lineup includes Lexi Tucker, the Bonehead Band, John Nilsen, Highwater Johnny and Petty Fever, a Tom Petty tribute act. Roaming the grounds, fairgoers will find Matt Henry Big Bubbles, illusionist Scott Anderson and the acrobats of Circus Luminescence.
Food vendors line the midway with fair staples like elephant ears and caramel corn, and a full carnival offers rides for all ages.
Fair organizers described the event center as a gathering place built on community resilience, in a statement carried by Northwest Travel & Life.
