Clackamas County is handing out free green light bulbs so residents can light their porches in honor of local veterans.

The county's Veteran Services Office has a limited supply of bulbs at its Kaen Road location.

The giveaway is part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide initiative led by the National Association of Counties (NACo). It is the office's second year participating.

Residents, businesses and community groups are asked to swap one exterior light for a green bulb from Nov. 4 through Nov. 11, Veterans Day.

The county has a few hundred bulbs on hand. The limit is one per household, first-come, first-served. Bulbs must be picked up in person at the Veteran Services Office, 2051 Kaen Road, Suite 281.

Office hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with a closure from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch.

The county encourages residents to call 503-650-5631 before visiting to confirm bulbs remain available.

Commissioner Martha Schrader said about 200,000 service members nationwide transition to civilian life each year.

Gus Bedwell, the county's veteran services manager, said the program gives the broader community a concrete way to express gratitude. "This is a chance for our whole community to show them the gratitude they deserve," Bedwell said in the county's announcement.

The County Administration office will also be lit green on Nov. 11.
