Lake Oswego junior Spencer Hughes is a nominee for The Oregonian's Oregon Boys Soccer Player of the Week, the newspaper announced Monday, Oct. 26.

Hughes starts at outside back for the Lakers. The Oregonian's Dan Brood described him as a defender who moves the play into the midfield and the attack, crediting him with helping lead the team through a strong season.

The nomination comes as Lake Oswego heads into the 6A state playoffs as the No. 12 seed, according to the OSAA bracket. The Lakers will host the No. 21 seed in a first-round game Saturday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m. The opponent has not been determined.

Lake Oswego's overall record is listed at 9-4-1 in the Oregonian nomination and on Model B's playoff tracker, though MaxPreps shows 8-5-1. Both sources agree on a 2-2-1 league mark, good for fourth in the Three Rivers League. The Lakers closed league play with a 0-2 loss to rival Lakeridge on Oct. 20.

Lakeridge, the No. 4 seed, earned a first-round bye and will host a second-round match Tuesday, Nov. 3. A win Saturday would send Lake Oswego to the second round the same day.

Hughes is joined on the ballot by Raymond Alcaraz of South Umpqua, Carson Bautista of Portland Christian, Canaan Burke of Willamette and Josiah Dessieux of Stayton, among others. Voting closes Sunday, Nov. 1, at 11:59 p.m., with the winner announced Monday, Nov. 2.

Lake Oswego opens its playoff run at home Saturday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m.
