Two former Rite Aid pharmacies in Lake Oswego and Oregon City sit vacant with no announced tenants nearly a year after the chain shuttered every one of its stores nationwide.
The locations at 16390 Boones Ferry Road in Lake Oswego and 1900 McLoughlin Blvd. in Oregon City are among 19 former Rite Aid storefronts across Oregon that remain dark and without known incoming businesses, according to an OregonLive survey published Monday, Aug. 24.
The Philadelphia-based chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2025 and closed all of its remaining 1,200-plus locations between May and September of that year.
The final two Rite Aid pharmacies in the country locked their doors Sept. 29, 2025, including one in Bend. Before the collapse, Rite Aid operated roughly 50 stores in Oregon.
Some stores found new life. These didn't.
Statewide, about a dozen former Rite Aid shells have reopened or have tenants lined up. Replacement businesses have skewed toward discount retailers, gyms and grocery stores: Ross Dress for Less moved into locations in Hood River, Lincoln City, Milwaukie and Tigard; Planet Fitness took over spaces in Eugene and Portland; and Grocery Outlet opened in the former Silverton store.
Another 13 Oregon locations were sold to CVS Pharmacy and reopened under that banner in late 2025, including the Rite Aid at 90 B Ave. in Lake Oswego. That conversion gave Lake Oswego residents continued pharmacy access downtown, but the larger Boones Ferry Road storefront remains empty.
The Boones Ferry corridor was already showing strain. The Lake Oswego Review reported in December 2025 that the Kruse Way/Boones Ferry Road area carried a 22.5% office vacancy rate, according to the Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce. Matt Evans of the chamber's economic development team told the Review at the time: "There are a couple buildings out there where you'll find there is a nameplate on the office space, but no one is there."
That figure covers office space, not retail. But the empty Rite Aid box adds another visible gap along a corridor where vacancies have accumulated.
Oregon City site raises questions
The Oregon City location at 1900 McLoughlin Blvd. sits in a shopping center along the city's main commercial artery. A Ross Stores job posting from May listed "1900 McLoughlin Blvd., Suite 50, Oregon City" as a work location, but OregonLive's August survey still lists the address as vacant. The "Suite 50" designation may refer to a different unit in the same center rather than the former Rite Aid space itself.
No permits, lease filings or public announcements have surfaced for either the Lake Oswego or Oregon City storefronts.
What's next
Nearby communities offer a template for what could eventually fill the spaces. The former Rite Aid in Tigard at 16200 S.W. Pacific Highway reopened as a Ross Dress for Less, and several other locations statewide have attracted discount grocers and fitness chains.
For now, both local storefronts join Wilsonville (8235 S.W. Wilsonville Road) on the list of nearby metro-area Rite Aid shells still waiting for tenants.
