Lake Oswego head coach Steve Coury became the eighth coach in Oregon high school football history to reach 300 wins when the Lakers beat Sherwood 51-16 on Sept. 18, as first reported by the Lake Oswego Review.
Coury took the job in the summer of 1992 thinking it would last one year. Thirty-five seasons later, the 69-year-old owns 301 victories, three Class 6A state championships and no plans to retire.
His record improved to 301-97 after a 48-12 win over Oregon City on Friday, Oct. 2, the Lakers' 11th straight victory over two seasons.
"It was a surprise to me, to be honest. I really had no idea," Coury told the Review. "… There's a lot of happiness from it to share with people, more than anything else."
Five wins now separate Coury from Kent Wigle, who coached at South Umpqua and Marshfield, for seventh on the state's all-time list. Jesuit's Ken Potter, who retired after the 2025 season, holds the Oregon record at 368.
The milestone caps a career rooted in this community. Coury played wide receiver at Lakeridge High School before earning first-team All-Pac-10 honors at Oregon State in 1979. He set Beaver records for career receptions (135) and receiving yards (1,837), according to the OSU Athletics Hall of Fame, which inducted him in 2003. A season with Ottawa in the Canadian Football League and coaching stints with the USFL's Portland Breakers and the University of Pittsburgh followed before then-athletic director Dick Curtis recruited him back to Lake Oswego.
Coury's staff tells its own story of loyalty. Assistants Karl Hallberg and Brian Newcomer have been with him all 35 years. Frank Everhart has logged 32 seasons, Chris Hubley 31 and Greg Lord 16. Hallberg's son, Nick Hallberg, took over as offensive coordinator in 2021, as OregonLive reported. Coury now coaches players whose fathers once suited up for him.
"There's been a lot of longevity. … That's been the real success to the story — everybody we've had together," Coury said.
His first signature moment came in 1992, when the Lakers beat Lakeridge for the first time in 16 years. Coury recalled that win as the turning point that made his players believe.
The program has reached the postseason in all but three of his 35 seasons and appeared in nine state championship games. Titles came in 2011, 2018 and 2025. After last November's championship win over Central Catholic, then-senior running back LaMarcus Bell called Coury "one of the goats" in a December 2025 Lake Oswego Review story.
The Lakers collected 13 of 14 first-place votes in the OSAA's Week 4 Class 6A coaches poll and stand 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Three Rivers League play after the Oregon City win. Senior defensive end Josh Christensen, a University of Oregon commit, anchors the defense.
Lake Oswego travels to No. 4 West Linn at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, for a showdown with the reigning TRL champions. Lakeridge, ranked No. 7 at 3-1, also opens league play this week.
